May chang is native to China, where Aura Cacia sources May Chang Essential Oil, and areas of Southeast Asia. The essential oil is extracted through distillation from the small fruits that grow on trees with white or pale yellow flowers. It is often referred to as "mountain pepper" for the fruit's resemblance to a pepper. May chang flowers also have a lemony scent, similar to the aroma of the essential oil.
